We try on clothes before we buy them and we test drive cars yet, when it comes to interaction, often a series of static images determines the nuances of what we make.

What mobile really means

Jeff Jarvis knows what's up:

I say "mobile" is a misnomer that leads some companies down the wrong road, envisioning users on a road looking for lattes. 
Most tablet usage is in the home. I use my "mobile" phone all the time in my office and even at home and certainly in boring meetings, when I'm quite sedentary. 
Mobile = local = around me now. Mobile is my personal bubble. It is enhanced convenience, putting the device and the world in my hand. That's the power of "mobile."

Here's one version of the identity I'm creating for a local business. It's just an assignment for my design class... but also a great excuse to draw baked goods ; )

 

This Illustrator document certainly doesn't look like much, but knowing my way around Adobe software is something I've wanted for years. Fifteen weeks later, I'm so grateful I signed up for this class.  

"Stupid" Games

Lantz told me that the deepest relationship he has ever had with a game was with poker, to which he was almost dangerously addicted. “Somehow teetering on the edge was part of the fun for me,” he said. “It was like a tightrope walk between this transcendently beautiful and cerebral thing that gave you all kinds of opportunities to improve yourself — through study and self-­discipline, making your mind stronger like a muscle — and at the same time it was pure self-destruction. There’s no word for that in English, for a thing that does both of those at the same time. But it’s wonderful.”

I asked him if he knew a word for that in another language.

He said no, but then he thought for a minute.

“I think it’s ‘game,’ ” he said. “I think the word for that is ‘game.’ ”

Talking Without Speaking

The overfriendly mateyness of social network conversation, where some poor marketing junior is told to be the ‘voice of the brand’ (within strict parameters) which essentially adds to typing thousands of words whilst avoiding saying anything.

That’s not ‘being human’.  That’s live, largely unskilled copywriting.
